Every Safety Net Is Becoming a Snare
The Iran war expands, Oregon is denied wildfire assistance, child welfare becomes an ICE tip line, Medicare shifts the bill, and Trump demands fewer childhood vaccines.
Today, the flu has reached its final, bloated form. I have it, my husband has it, and the children, having survived their own encounters with the virus, are now confronting the far more dangerous stage of the illness: being cared for by two sick parents whose remaining energy could be stored comfortably inside a thimble.
We will hope for the best. On every other measure, life is good. The children are feeling better, the plants remain beautiful, and the homefront is happy. Laundry remains my mortal enemy, although it has shown admirable restraint by not developing ballistic capabilities while I am weakened.
Our household, in other words, is temporarily diseased but structurally sound. The same can’t be said for the federal government, where institutions created to protect human beings are being converted into traps, weapons, political demands, rationed aid, or exciting new opportunities to receive a larger bill.
The war with Iran is expanding again after several days of relative calm, because apparently even a brief pause in bloodshed now requires immediate correction. Iran launched ballistic missiles at American forces at Muwaffaq Salti Air Base and the headquarters of U.S. Central Command in Jordan. Jordan said it intercepted five missiles, with no immediate reports of casualties or damage. The United States and Saudi Arabia then conducted joint strikes against Iran-backed militias in Iraq, killing at least 20 fighters and wounding 32 more.
Iraq condemned the strikes as an attack on its sovereignty, which it was, while also insisting that its territory shouldn’t be used to attack neighboring countries, which it shouldn’t. This is the advanced stage of regional war in which every government is violating someone else’s borders while issuing solemn statements about the importance of borders.
Saudi Arabia’s direct participation marks a dangerous expansion of the conflict. Iran-backed Houthis have also attacked Saudi energy facilities, Iran has tightened its control over shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, and oil prices rose sharply as markets considered the exciting possibility that the world’s energy supply might become collateral damage in another war without a workable ending.
The administration continues to speak about retaliation as though retaliation were a destination rather than a road that keeps circling the same graveyard. Each attack creates the justification for another attack, and every new front is described as the regrettable consequence of the previous escalation, which was itself described as the regrettable consequence of the escalation before that. The machinery is working perfectly; peace is simply the part no one remembered to install.
The federal government can apparently locate the money, personnel, and institutional enthusiasm required to expand a war across the Middle East. Back in Oregon, however, the Trump administration has decided that helping firefighters protect hundreds of homes requires a more rigorous examination of the national purse.
FEMA approved Oregon’s requests for Fire Management Assistance Grants for the Lower Dry Creek, Awaka Butte, and Grasshopper fires, but denied assistance for the East Evans Creek Fire and the Rowe Creek Fire Complex, two of the largest and most dangerous fires burning in the state.
These grants can reimburse as much as 75 percent of eligible firefighting costs, including equipment, materials, and mobilization. They exist so states can attack dangerous fires before those fires become catastrophic, which FEMA has apparently interpreted as an invitation to wait until the catastrophe develops a more impressive résumé.
When Oregon applied for assistance, the East Evans Creek Fire had burned nearly 16,000 acres and placed more than 230 homes under Level 3 “Go Now” evacuation orders. It threatened roads, bridges, utilities, communications towers, businesses, campgrounds, irrigation systems, and agricultural operations.
The Rowe Creek Fire Complex had placed more than 400 people under Level 3 evacuation orders. Since FEMA denied the request, the complex has grown to nearly 295,000 acres. Oregon Senators Jeff Merkley and Ron Wyden said the denials represented “a significant departure from FEMA’s historical criteria and agency guidance.” State officials told the senators that FEMA had previously considered an immediate threat to roughly 150 primary residences sufficient for approval, although that apparent threshold had recently risen above 200. Both fires exceeded even the higher standard.
FEMA reportedly denied the grants because the fires didn’t satisfy the criteria for a major disaster declaration. That is a fascinating requirement for a program designed to prevent fires from becoming major disasters.
Federal regulations say assistance may be granted when a fire threatens destruction that would constitute a major disaster. The destruction doesn’t need to be completed first. Firefighters are generally encouraged to arrive before the neighborhood has been converted into a historical photograph.
Oregon had at least 86 active fires burning more than one million acres as of July 27, with over 33,000 people under some level of evacuation. The state’s fire conditions were the worst in the nation, but apparently a forest must now complete the proper ideological paperwork before the federal government will agree that it’s on fire.
At home, meanwhile, I am trying to keep three children alive with fluids, snacks, and the occasional maternal instruction issued from beneath a blanket. This brings us naturally to the Office of Refugee Resettlement, which has apparently decided that helping vulnerable children is too limiting when it could also help arrest their families.
Internal government data reviewed by Reuters shows that the agency responsible for caring for unaccompanied migrant children has supplied Immigration and Customs Enforcement with more than 460,000 leads since January 2025. The information involved children, their prospective sponsors, and other household members. Those tips have contributed to more than 12,000 arrests.
Families trying to reunite with children in government custody must provide addresses, fingerprints, identification records, DNA results, and information about the people living in their homes. That process was supposed to determine whether a child could be released safely. Under the Trump administration, it has become an exceptionally efficient way to assemble a list of people for ICE to find.
Former ORR deputy director Jen Smyers described the change plainly: “They are weaponizing a child welfare program for the purposes of more deportations.”
The consequences extend beyond the arrests. Unaccompanied children spent an average of 30 days in government custody during fiscal year 2024. By June 2026, that average had risen to 194 days as prospective sponsors attempted to satisfy new screening requirements without accidentally summoning immigration agents to the family home.
The government has created a magnificent bureaucratic trap. If a parent doesn’t come forward, the child remains in custody. If the parent does come forward, the information supplied to retrieve the child may be handed to ICE. The family reunification process now operates like a ransom note written on official stationery.
The Trump administration is also ending a temporary Medicare Part D subsidy program that has helped contain prescription drug premiums for roughly 25 million people enrolled in stand-alone drug plans.
The program will expire after 2026. Administration officials acknowledge that approximately 45 percent of enrollees could see monthly premiums rise by between $11 and $20 next year, although beneficiaries will retain the traditional American health care privilege of spending several afternoons comparing opaque insurance plans to determine which company will disappoint them most affordably.
Dr. Mehmet Oz, the administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, called the subsidy a bailout for insurance companies. There are legitimate questions about subsidizing insurers, but allowing the program to expire without an equivalent mechanism for protecting beneficiaries doesn’t punish insurance companies. It sends older and disabled Americans the invoice and congratulates the government for its fiscal courage.
The program reduced premiums by an estimated 40 percent in 2025 and 27 percent in 2026. Ending it may push more beneficiaries toward Medicare Advantage, where plans often include drug coverage but may also impose narrower networks and additional restrictions. This is health care reform in its most familiar American form: the government announces that it stopped helping an industry, the industry adjusts, and the patient discovers the savings itemized on their own bill.
President Trump has also reportedly been pressuring Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to cut childhood vaccine recommendations more aggressively because Kennedy has not moved quickly enough to validate Trump’s fixation on a connection between vaccines and autism.
That connection has been investigated repeatedly and doesn’t exist. In December, the World Health Organization reviewed 31 primary studies published between 2010 and 2025 and reaffirmed that vaccines do not cause autism. Between 1974 and 2024, global immunization against just 14 diseases prevented at least 154 million deaths, including those of 101 million infants, while adding an estimated 10.2 billion years of healthy life, an achievement that has unfortunately failed to compete with the persuasive authority of Donald Trump having a feeling.
Kennedy has already reduced the federal childhood schedule from 17 recommended vaccines to 11, although a federal judge blocked the overhaul after finding that the administration had bypassed required procedures and expert review. Trump reportedly wants him to go further.
We have therefore reached the point at which the president is not merely ignoring scientific evidence. He is pressuring the nation’s health secretary to continue altering public health policy until reality produces the answer he prefers. The research question has become less “Do vaccines cause autism?” and more “How many times must scientists say no before the government begins punishing children for the inconvenience?”
There is a pattern here, and it is more consequential than any single policy. The military responds to escalation with escalation and insists the next explosion may finally restore stability. Emergency assistance exists to help states confront disasters before they become unmanageable, so FEMA denies it until the fire is sufficiently disastrous. A child welfare agency gathers information to reunite families, so the government uses it to find people for ICE. Medicare protects people from medical costs, so the administration removes the protection and calls the resulting premiums market discipline. A health department exists to prevent disease, so the president orders it to keep working until established science becomes politically convenient.
Here at home, the children are recovering, the plants continue quietly producing beauty without an executive order, and the laundry remains tyrannical but unarmed. My husband and I may be operating the household from beneath blankets while communicating primarily through coughing, but the homefront is happy.
For now, that is enough. The flu will pass, the children will survive their convalescing parents, and one day I may even defeat the laundry, although I refuse to make irresponsible promises during a national crisis.
