An Important Subscription Update
Subscribe now to lock in our current rates and support independent, pro-democracy journalism
Dear readers,
We had hoped to avoid raising our subscription prices. Unfortunately, the economy did not consult us before deciding to become… whatever this is.
After carefully reviewing our costs, we have decided that even we are no longer immune to the national hobby of paying more for everything. We considered simply declaring that prices had gone down, but unfortunately our accountant insists on using reality.
Our current rates of $7/month, $70/year, and $210 for Founding Members have helped us build this community, and we are deeply grateful to everyone who has supported this work. As the publication has grown, so has the work required to sustain it. Writing, editing, reader support, comment moderation, refunds, backend administration, research, and expanding into new formats like video have all become a much larger part of what we do each week.
To keep this work sustainable, we’ll be raising rates for new subscribers to:
$9/month
$90/year
$300/year for Founding Members
These new rates will take effect on 08/15/2026. Until then, free subscribers can still upgrade at the current rate and keep that price going forward. Existing paid subscribers will remain locked into their current subscription price.
Think of it as beating inflation before inflation finds you. It’s one of the few races Americans are still allowed to win. If this work matters to you, now is a great time to become a paid subscriber.
Your support makes it possible for us to continue producing independent, pro-democracy journalism while expanding into the sustainability and climate justice work that we believe is becoming more urgent by the day.
Thank you for reading, sharing our work, joining the conversations, correcting our typos, making us laugh in the comments, and helping sustain this community. We genuinely couldn’t do it without you.
With gratitude,
Mary and Shanley

Will happily continue to support independent, pro-democracy journalism - you are one of the best!
Is renewal automatic?
