As someone who has been accompanying and advocating for immigrants for a long time, the situation of immigrant children continues to break my heart. It is so typical of this administration to use the kids in order to detain and deport other family members. Kids suffer when they are in detention, when they are in ORR custody, and anywhere when they are separated from their parents. Having a parent deported is a trauma. Being in detention is a trauma. Living in the shadows is traumatic. Many of these kids are US citizens. We should be looking out for their well-being, but we are not. However, our Senator Merkley has introduced the Children's Safe Welcome Act, which tries to put some more guardrails around children who are in DHS custody. It's a small step. https://www.merkley.senate.gov/merkley-kamlager-dove-congress-must-ensure-safety-well-being-of-children-seeking-asylum/
