We went to Harbor Freight, purchased cheap tool chests, found cheap countertops remnants, and painted and covered the tool chests with contact paper. They were serviceable for years, and later recycled into our workshop when we finally got “real” cabinets.

May I offer a recommendation for finishing wood countertops? Odie's Oil. Food-safe, non-toxic. An amazing story about the product. We used it for a butcher block top in our kitchen. Time-consuming to put on, and a not-unpleasant odor that took time to dissipate. But the perfect solution that I rub my fingers over in joy every day.
