I recommend Resistbot for easily communicating with your representatives in Congress. The website explains the process. You can write your own message, up to 300 words - the site will automatically format and address it for sending by fax, email or mail (a nominal charge for fax or mail).
Congressional representative websites include ways to contact their offices. “5 Calls” connects you with representative offices to speak in person.
We the people need to “flood the zones” of all elected representatives to demand more effective opposition to Trump’s lawless rampages against the Constitution and those who seek to uphold it. Every illegal ICE and DHS act of terror brought against individuals needs to be showcased in a court case. Legal groups bringing these cases need financial help. State and local law enforcement resources need to be deployed more actively to protect communities under assault, invoking state and local laws; issues of “federal supremacy” can be sorted later.
Appeasement, denial and distraction are attractive responses to the early chaos of growing tyranny, but history has an unambiguous lesson: they only facilitate things getting worse.
An excellent and very depressing piece of writing. Thank you Mary for stating it as it really is. All Democrats and any elected person with a grain of morality should be following the lead of Govenor Walz and Mayor Frey and saying " No more, not on my watch. This has to stop and people have to be held accountable. No one is above the law". Silence is complicity.
Mary, I hear you say that the founders did not envision this. It seems they did, and they put into place those quaint checks and balances. What they did not envision, I believe, is that one party would control the government and would capitulate to the man that they could imagine: a wannabe dictator. That person would be impeded by Congress, stopped by SCOTUS, and certainly the will of the people and their power at the ballot box would correct for such a man. Remember, those founders left embedded in our precious Constitution IN FIVE PLACES the institution of slavery, whether checked (no new imports of persons after 1808) or protected (3/5ths and fugitive slave clauses). They weren't perfect, and they could not foresee things like automatic weapons and flying machines. Or American made assholes like Twump and Judy gaining ultimate power through intimidation and violence.
Thank you for this profoundly powerful piece, Mary. It encapsulates the need for a sustained movement to reign in (and in time stamp out) the out of control brutality being perpetrated on our country.
Hoping more will hear the call to take action without delay. Our very lives depend on it now.
Glad I read this in the morning and not at night. I grew up with stories of my parents in Hungary fighting the Russians for a couple weeks. My aunt was throwing molotov cocktails at Russian tanks in the streets. My parents were nabbed by the Russians and thrown in the back of a truck headed for Siberia. They escaped and found their way to Austria where refugees were found sponsorships in Canada or Australia. When turd was elected the first time, I got vibes of what happened in Hungary in the late 1950s.
Mary, thank you for another excellent thought piece. I agree with your suggestions for a concrete way forward. This is what I see around me, though , with my like-minded friends and family. While I try to go the extra mile and march, call, share, post, encourage, etc etc, many of said friends/family do nothing. They acknowledge and abhor our current political situation but do nothing more than complain. My powers of persuasion have little effect. It upsets and frustrates me to no end. My fear is that this is not an aberration but rather a common (non)response to our political morass. What to do?
Am I bad to wish Trump dead every day?

Thanks...you've laid it out clearly. Now, we ordinary citizens must find ways to fight back daily.
