It's become obvious that most Americans have not been paying attention to Project 2025, the Heritage Foundation agenda, or what tech bros Peter Thiel, Curtis Yarvin, Russell Vought and others have their thug tactics involved in (hint: it's amalgamating all N and S America into one western hemisphere technocrat state that they rule while we just do as we're told).. With Canada for instance IT IS NOT TRADE. IT IS ANNEXATION. The addendums they tried to add to their trade agreement for Cdn negotiators to sign onto (probably trying to sneak them so they were unnoticeable) all involved giving up Canadian sovereignty and becoming not just subservient to the US, but being annexed like a territorial possession.Things like: no trade with any other country unless the US approved; no longer having the right to use French in any way involved in trade (because of course they are all about English only); the right of the US to impose 50% tariff our way if the US felt Canada wasn't doing as they were told. And there were a couple of other particulars that took away our rights as a country as well. In other words, a takeover disguised as a handshake deal. THIS IS THE REASON for Canada's response. Wake up US, you yourselves are being "taken over" by right wing fanatics (mostly Republicans) that are implementing Project 2025 goals such as food insecurity measures (yes you read that right, look it up), educational reform to their standards alone, which we've all seen and are aware of; lack of health care, and the list goes on. Please everyone research what I'm saying, don't become a frog in their kettle. They are slowly turning up the heat and it will soon be too late to jump out.
We Canadians are paying attention. You cite the very reasons we walked away from negotiations…..it is about our sovereignty, not about trade. We know this….shame not enough of our neighbours know this. 🇨🇦
Unfortunately even some Cdns are not paying attention to this. I have family and friends I could slap at times to wake them up and draw their attention away from their cozy every day life is fine, Americans are just being Americans bubble. Frustrating to say the least.
I really object to the situation being reduced to, "feels less like sophisticated economic policy and more like two brothers fighting over an extension cord."
I wanted to click a Like to this, but the content won't allow it. So, I'll say thanks for all the above and credit you with a rare mention of Curtis Yarvin - his name is missing from far too many of these conversations. And it shouldn't be...
You nailed it! Trump is the demented circus barker outside the tent. The radical, treasonous freaks inside the tent planned and are implementing a coup in real time. Their vision is not only unconstitutional and devastatingly harmful to Americans other than a tiny cabal, it endangers the world.
How main stream media and Democratic leaders aren’t screaming about this so every sane person is fully aware of the plot, its implications, and the steps being taken to make it real is a living tragedy.
I think too many people see this just as performative politics and have an "it'll be over at some point and it'll be fine and "it" would never happen here". And I think some people just don't want to think about it and are happy to remain wilfully ignorant.
Oh, for a factory reset button on this world, although where those factory settings would take us is obviously open to debate. Wouldn't it be wonderful to exist in a time where governments were sane and sensible, working for their people, and individual nations could agree that each had the right to exist on its own terms, without feeling the need to take over or destroy others?
Sorry for my excursion into fantasy!
Meanwhile, we deal with the daily horrors (on a national scale) and frustrations (on the domestic front) as best we can; there is much to be said for the Canadian "Elbows up",
Once again, as a former general contractor who dealt with many homeowners in the midst of a renovation project, I can only add that it is an EXTREMELY stressful process, even when it works according to plan. Between the millions of decisions which require mutual agreement, the constant state of chaos and incompletion is its own kind of extreme stress. Throw in a few children and a toddler, and it can go nuclear at any time. Hang in there!
I can identify with you on the love of office supplies and organization materials. I, too, love the idea that my home will be organized and my art supplies will be exactly where I can find them when I need them. I'm 76. Hasn't happened yet. This country is also a mess ruled by the whims of Donald's gut and a bunch of spineless sycophants.
There is so much I’d like to proudly bang on about here…..from the national pride Trump has lit like fire underneath every single Canadian….the resolve that we will ride out the hardship that we know we will have to endure, and meet that hardship as a united and sovereign country….the extent of the natural resources the US obtains from Canada, including crude, electricity, critical minerals and potash…..the admiration we have for our leaders from the steely resolve of Carney to the scrappy hockey brawler Dougie Ford who, yesterday, told Trump to kiss his ass.
But for the sake of brevity I’ll simply refer back to the start of this essay and point out with characteristic Canadian calm and politeness that that extension cord we’re fighting over??…..we own that cord. We own the electricity that powers that cord. And we own the wall socket it plugs in to. 🇨🇦🇨🇦

Laugh with young children.
