It’s been suggested the Governor should appoint a replacement Senator as is apparently allowed by the state constitution, to force proof of McConnell’s life and competence. In this day and age, that no one has offered evidence of his actual condition seems beyond bizarre.

Julie, Yes one would think this was the LOGICAL solution! However, just this year Kentucky law requires a Special Election to fill a vacant US Senate seat, not an appointment. Remember Andy Breasher, Dem, is the Govenor... that is why this nonsense is going on.

Elaine, his wife flew to China to meet with the VP of China, 3 days after Mitch was admitted.

She has since returned I believe.

Thune, and the rest of the despicable caudry of 'congress' must be held to answer for their dereliction of duty to this Country.

I find it is hard to keep hoping that the election in November will lead to change; I wonder if there will be an election.....

Yes, I was just reading about the new law, which seems to be valid, although it apparently raises questions that invite litigation.

As I understand it, the governor begins the special election process with a proclamation of vacancy, which would also seem a compelling reason he is legally entitled to evidence of McConnell’s true condition.

It certainly appears as if the gang that can't shoot straight can't shoot straight...

another item for the long list of new laws for the books if we ever get an administration and a Congress that represents the people in office again. these folks are hired and paid for by the citizens of the United States. Every company i ever worked for had a policy that stated that if you were out of the office for illness for two or three days, you were required to produce a doctor's note. if you were out much more than that, they demanded to know the full story and you were at risk of losing your job. these folks should be held accountable. their tax filings should be made public, and their health records should be made public. when they have issues like McConnell or the guy from NJ Tom Kean, there needs to be some rules to make it known what the issues are and the status. the government has forgotten that they work for us... or perhaps they no longer care as they have bent all the rules so that it would appear we work for them... judging by the flow of money, i am thinking it is a lot more of the latter than the former

I think there’s a good possibility that he is on life support or dead and gone. The fact that his wife said his condition didn’t merit her interrupt ing her trip is the tell. She probably would rather be out of the country anyway rather than be hounded for answers and lying to the press for whoever is pulling the strings. Dems need to demand proof of life and soon.

Thank you for detailing so well. I'm sure many folks would appreciate four months of paid leave as Kean enjoyed and the medical benefits attached to his position that have been paid for by tax dollars.

Just another signal that all is not well in our divided country. We, the people, are under attack by the two political parties and their willing members to sabotage our Constitution and the rights of the people. Do we stand idly by ? I think not! Passionate voices that continue to speak out from independent news sources and daily commentary from writers such as you, Mary, will help to keep the flames of protest alive and well until we rescue ourselves from this calamity of injustice.

"The machinery of government is still functioning. It is simply becoming harder to determine whom it serves." Not really - it serves the billionaires. Paul Krugman is out with an interview with Dennis Kelleher of Better Markets, and they talk about how the dismantling of various supervisory institutions (e.g. the SEC, the bank oversight function of the Fed) has put the economy in a position even more dangerous than what led to the 2008 crash. They also talk about the crypto money that is pouring into both parties and how that can impact the economy. It's a long interview, but very informative, and not comforting. But it's plain who is benefiting and who is not.
