Reading that bit about the Garden Grove, CA situation, I was reminded of the first episode of The Newsroom (We Just Decided to) which covered the evolving disaster of the Deepwater Horizon blowout in the Gulf of Mexico. Also following instances of questionable safety measures, also exposing an understaffed and underfunded inspection regime, the lesson of pay now or pay much more later seems to be one that governments simply won't learn.
On this Memorial Day, think of where we are, where we've been, and where in the hell are we going? That is the question. I am a nonobservant religious type, but on this message from the Pope, I agree. So many things to think upon on this day of remembrance. Data Center's , of which California has 280 of them plus 5400-6000 nationwide will be our next concern as electricity and water fees and abundance diminish. War is beginning to have an entirely new meaning as I try to concentrate on those who lost their lives fighting in it as opposed to what is going on legally in our own country! We need all the help we can get! Anyone in charge?
Regarding, "... that the thing most worth protecting is the human role in human society, in work, in war, in the decisions that shape other people’s lives." What amazes me is that this even needs to be said. But yes, it does.
Haaretz (Israeli press) reports Trump’s latest position: “it should be mandatory” as part of any Iran deal that countries including Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Egypt, Jordan and Turkey join the Abraham Accords to normalize relations with Israel.
Trump’s assurances of an imminent deal to end hostilities with Iran are no more credible than his assurances in spring 2020 that Covid would disappear in weeks.
How anyone relies on this lifelong fraudster/con man - other than insiders who make money from his manipulations and lies - is beyond me.
It strikes me that with Iran having all the cards, if they want to really mess with Turnip Head, they just need to say “Regime Change, or the Straight stays closed”.
I’ve talked about my mute button and the gratitude from inventions, tools to manage life. Nothing T says have I listened to for years. His accuracy, integrity, honesty, worth went out the window LONG before 1/6/21. But, I saw what was coming, warned plenty, and have put 2 cents worth in , responding to the gifted writers , a form of thank you accompanied by the real words now and then.
From the get go it was a lesson.
How is the American pulse standing naked before the world? It’s tired. The world is too. Yet the same old games are played.
Repeating the same mistakes hoping for different results…casual truths well worn in the cycles and halls of addiction .
The change prophesied is huge..either way it goes.
Vote accordingly.
We will never be civilized until WAR is ended, until all the people giving ultimations of eradication “if you don’t pay up” are properly certified and into safe places of appropriate care. The warning signs are there early enough.
Remember when Pope Francis put out his environmental encyclical "Laudato Si'? It was hailed by environmentalists, etc. etc. However, within those texts there was a statement or two that made it clear that population growth had nothing to do with the ills facing the environment... that families having too many children to feed was not the problem with the issue of the clear cutting of forests in Brazil, etc. Fast forward to Leo, who is now going to no doubt get kudos from people who never read the fine print. The Roman Catholic Church has no business chiming in on either the environment or AI. They continue to pull the wool over the eyes of the people, which means the term "sheep" for those in the media, etc. who give Leo those kudos is pretty darn accurate.
I knew as soon as I scrolled past the graphic, that I'd find your comment here. I quit the catholic church 6 decades ago. So very much I disagree with, but I am willing to give them credit for promoting positive change. We need to encourage progress where we see it. Recently my neighbor replaced the 'trump country' flag he'd been flying with a state flag. I walked by and had a friendly conversation about his beautiful flowers. We probably still disagree about most things, but at least now a conversation is possible. Baby steps.
An institution which is still abusing children, still denying women's reproductive rights and gay rights, gets NO CREDIT from me for anything they do. You know how Trump deflects our attention from Epstein? The RCC tries the same thing all the time, and mostly gets away with it.
"AI companies need 'moral voices that the incentives cannot bend'..."
The US government and politicians also need "moral voices that the incentives cannot bend."
I'm not holding my breath, for either scenario. 😕

yes, "inspecting by letter" was a new concept for me.

Thank you, Mary.
