Absence of magnetometers; no security checkpoint until nearing the entrance to the ballroom; an event that Trump has declined to attend in the past (So why was he there? He hates the press.)

What else might one do to facilitate a bit of drama to upstage the correspondents and their mentalist?

While I am skeptical of the "staged" idea, one question stands out for me: why did the agents tackle him instead of shooting him?

What else? Not very much except maybe to allow a few innocent people to be “lamentably” killed in this staged event.

I can't help myself! It was a planned staging to elicit sympathies for trump and acceptance of the need for a ballroom, not that he would ever invite any journalist who disagreed with him if one is built. Those combat-ready troops with their weapons pounced upon that stage to escort the felon off and played their parts well. However, this turns out, I am outraged at the number of journalists who attended even though they've been berated time and time again by the felon. They have no backbone and the entire event should be cancelled during this administration and until the journalists are willing to write bravely and truthfully about this corrupt administration. Rant over!

When I first got wind of this, I new this would be particularly messy, just like the other attempts on his life. Although Trump will want to bask in the hero worship indefinitely, he has single handedly created an electorate with an ever decreasing attention span. Hopefully, in this case, it works to our benefit...

Everyone assumes Trump was the target, including Trump, who’s a true pig in shit that chaos and drama put the spotlight on him as “victim” and hero (in his mind). It’s not a surprising assumption, but it is not evidence. Remember Reagan’s assailant was trying to impress Jodie Foster.

I hope intrepid reporters with a few hackers on hand can uncover the online history of the accused assailant. Something triggered him to take action. Who or what that was seems relevant.

I just don’t buy it. Too convenient. Too quick to message the ballroom. I wish I felt differently.

I don’t want to see him assassinated; after him making fun of journalist Serge Kovaleski, I want him to have a disabling stroke and live in a wheelchair…sorry I shouldn’t be so negative, but dammit he just pisses me off!

There is nothing real about this other than the real suspicion that the whole thing was staged for it's advertising potential. This is just the sort of thing I expect from Miller, Vought, and Blanche, Fascist Fantasy Incorporated. They have a "suspect" and they're doing an "investigation." More likely concocting a story they con have "Cash" Patel and his Keystone Kops give to the press. No one should believe ANYTHING that comes out of this lying, fascist regime. This was just another distraction, turned into another ad for the orange asshole's "strength" and his "grand" (or is it great?) Epstein ballroom.

Any capable assassin wouldn’t hamper himself with an overload of weapons. One concealed knife or handgun would do the job. This is Trump (literally) crying wolf (again) and it’s not working anymore.

I planned to watch something else on tv and then saw that this had happened and was on the channel I wanted to watch. My thoughts were 'ah crap ... more trump bs ... Mary will fill me in in the morning' and listened to an audiobook instead. So thanks for the summary, Mary. Assassination attempt, scripted or unscripted ... just 'reality tv' like Housewives or Survivor. Give me the Epstein Files to catch my attention!!

My sentiments exactly Laurie; I, too, count on Mary to be the voice of sanity and reason. I believe this was just another stunt to the pressure off WHERE ARE THE DAMN FILES??

April 25th was the anniversary of Virginia Giuffre's death and she was being honored.......

The images of the event - apart from the drama - felt like complicity on steroids. Big egos in designer finery, with celebrity hair and makeup that we know require great effort and planning, saying look at me, look at who I know. All the rationales for attending are wrapped in “I” and “me” language. We saw equivalent photos from Hitler’s galas, attended by the enablers and sycophants who served his demonic ego and agenda. I looked at that room and thought these people are not on our side.

Did he stay up all night the night before composing his “assassination“ speech?

I don’t know how you process all of those layers so quickly and synthesize them into a coherent, persuasive (and sardonic) narrative. But you do. And you did. Again. Thank you, Mary.

Thank you for this sober, factual account. I am disgusted with our state of affairs when so many of us (me included) immediately wondered if was a staged event. We are in sad and dangerous times.

Once again, Mary, well done. Enjoy reading your newsletter installments. Both very informative while exceptionally entertaining.

Trump’s comment that he’s one of “the people that make the biggest impact” is correct, but not in the way he believes. Biggest impact can be positive or negative. His is most definitely negative and will require major, long-term cleanup in the U.S. and around the world, once he and his MAGA cult are relegated to the trash cans of history. I sincerely hope that will be in my remaining lifetime so that my sons, their families and all of the younger generations will be able to live and thrive during the post-47 era on a healthier, safer, kinder planet.

Good job being “neutral “ for now.

I come to this one a day late but wanted to add my sentiments of poorly staged spectacle.

Several facts lend themselves to this conclusion for me……

The one and only Correspondent’s Dinner Trmp attends and this occurs. Why suddenly, after all these years of berating and maligning the press would he suddenly want to engage with them?

The anomalies in the security perimeters compared to previous events at the same venue with Trmp in attendance. In fact the event was not designated as a National Special Security Event. Why not, with so many Administration VIPs in attendance?

The need by the Administration for a new distraction at this particular moment.

The rapid pivot to advertising the necessity of his currently besieged ballroom given the events that transpired. By Sunday morning the Administration had fired off a letter to the National Trust for Historic Preservation demanding they drop their lawsuit over Trumps ballroom and if they refused they were literally putting the president’s life at risk.

The fact that MANY….seems to me TOO many….top tier administration VIPs in attendance.
