In the olden days when we used pull down a shade, occasionally one would suddenly spin up, shutting around the holder with a loud “snap.” That’s what this article was for me. God, we need him out of office.
The insanity is coming at us from all directions. The loyal and morally imperative thing to do is impeach Trump. Attention Democrats: For the love of God stop speaking like wonkish pundits and professors. Speak out loud and plainly with words of one syllable. Trump needs to go. We very well may not have a 2026 election. Don’t wait for him to cancel it.
Canada calling here. We are aware. However, the invasion began many years ago. That is easy enough to draw up as a timeline. An irony of it is how so many Canadian cities and landscapes are the American cities and landscapes in so many American TV shows and films, all rebranded as American, and all called a "Canadian" film industry. It is so very sad that "Virgin River", filmed in Harrison, British Columbia, fits no Northern Californian landscape at all, a fact which points at either blissful colonialism or ignorance among Americans of what their country is actually like. Just one example. Managing an empire on these kind of projections is bound to fail. It's not hard to fail at Empire. We are fully aware of all that, too. A list is also easy to draw up. More nebulous is the vast difference between watching the USA with cultural tolerance, even admiration, from the outside, and actual cultural belonging. Simply put, the images don't travel. What is culture on the American side, read perhaps as "reality", is experienced as "someone else's culture" or "image" on the other, even at those points at which it has infiltrated Canadian culture. The current US administration is aware of a culture of images and manipulates it daily. I doubt it understands this nuance. Power kind of blinds that kind of thing. I am old enough at 68 to have witnessed English colonialism in Canada and its long shift to American colonialism, and close enough to US culture to be fully aware of the successful colonialism by New York of much of American cultural productivity at the same time. Also, as Canadians, we are quite fully aware that half a continent is not governable as a "51st state", nor a space that can be occupied by a single military administration. These inefficiencies of size are quite well known internationally, and Canadians are internationally aware, at least more than the US average. Perhaps it's better said like this: Canada is an international nation; the USA is a national one. What is left of a Canada mismanaged is a place with no functional political power, such as, if you look at a global map in the dream of a world of superpower regions, Africa. It's the playground for all three. The USA gets the Americas. Russia gets Europe and the Middle East. China gets the rest of Asia and the West Pacific. Africa is preyed on by all. Or, to put it a different way: the USA keeps the Americas as vassal states; Russia keeps Europe and the Middle East as vassal states; China keeps South and East Asia as vassal states. Africa's history as a space to provide these powers with extra bonus powers remains as it has so tragically for half a millennium. Oh, and one more thing: something for you to keep in mind in Oregon, so close to California, is what happened in terms of land ownership and legal transfer after the US military victory and resulting annexation of Alta California: many promises of a transferable legal system, which ended in near complete annulment of Spanish property rights through court manipulations. A lot of those dispossessed Spanish sons went north to British Columbia. Accordingly, here in the north we have an older ranching and cattle herding past than most of the US American West. Such ironies! We are aware of all this. We know how things fail. We know the pattern. We are troubled. If Trump had offered 13 states, he would have had some buy-in. That he didn't, makes it clear that statehood is not in the cards. The irony is that the US regime is running on the foundation of nationalism, whereas it is in truth a post-nationalist corporatism. In other words, Canada is in grave danger, as is Denmark, but so is the USA. The current game is to create a nation, DC, that has rule over all the states, while real power rests with a few very very wealthy men and corporations, all working their asses off to replace their dependency on states, and the workers they can provide, with "intelligent" machines. They are nothing of the kind, but they will do the trick. I read you because you cut through the veils of illusion well. It is a rare thing. Keep up the good work.
If anyone wants to see how entirely medically mad Trump is, try YouTube The Daily Beast. I think taking a Torch and ‘doing a Geddry’ is the best way to balance ourselves. Thanks Mary, I don’t know how I would stay sane in the US.
You may not have been paying attention. Canada has seen where this is going, faster than any other country. "Elbows Up" is more than a figure of speech. It is Canada's operational agenda for a year now. Denmark, Greenland and the American hemisphere need to see Trump's threats clearly and act accordingly.
How in God's name are we going to put an end to this insanity? Every time I think things can't get any worse, it does by an order of magnitude the next day.
I want to take collectively the GOP, cradle their cheeks in my hands like a parent to their child. “Now listen to me carefully, dear, our allies are not toys to be trifled with. They are real people living on sovereign soil that is not ours. People die.” That’s is the nice me. The other begins “WTAF are you guys doing? Invading Greenland? Invading Venezuela? Scaring the hell out of our Canadian friends? You need to sack your Mad King now.”
What is left to shock our combined brains and bodies into action? This maniacal behavior just keeps on giving and giving. trump is not capable of coming up with all the intricacies elaborated here so , of course, it's lawyer speak. Those lawyer's are a sorry lot and should be impeached at the same time as the current occupant of the White House.
"national security" and "national emergency" are trump's magic-wand words. I can see him declaring that SNAP must be eliminated because people who aren't hungry are more likely to go to No Kings Day Rallies and "join AntiFa."
And what if Cuba decided that owning Puerto Rico was vital to its national security? (I know, the White Supremacists might not object to giving up all those brown people.). Or the Philippines decided its national security depended on occupying Guam?
I do hope Denmark /Greenland demands the “envoy” provided all his internet history bla, bla, and then refuses him entry.
brilliant!

Dear Canadian friends, Trump wants your oil sands, among other things. Beware!
