Great column with a great ending.

It seems that another thought is likely also present within and outside the US: is trump cognizant of what he’s doing or simply reading scripts written by his handlers? I cannot believe Hegseth is competent to manage a war “wisely” if that term can even make sense. No one in the current administration creates any confidence of military or moral expertise in my opinion.

I couldn’t agree more

Precise sum up. And Mary’s last paragraph too. As I read, I think…but, but what about…and the Mary’s next paragraph dives into the mechanisms.

It’s no longer about just me…that was 50+ years ago planning and caring for my own family…then it was my community…then my state…now we’re all into Global

The Trumpian philosophy, and really most oligarch/dictators …there is no stability , no grand plan . ..just chaos and destroying whomever is the next antagonist/obstacle in front of their next shiny toy or obsession. Well established and fact after fact year after year. Too many forget this, too many fall prey, too many get caught up in the fast sales pitch of bored playboys and their mass of coattail riders and their greed for more.

The once pristine land Clark explored is now polluted waters and next privitization of those water rights, or ocean farming choked with plastic now having entered even our blood stream.

Honor. Morals. Decency. Trust..fell out a window…or were they pushed? Autocracy is on the rise, the village is takes to raise the children got bombed ….the neighbor that babysat the kids just got deported, the treaty for hopeful peace eradicated by a vindictive egotist…

Sad statistics.

Civilized ? Ha!

Amen, Patricia. We certainly don’t deserve to be called the greatest or most powerful nation— we have become a nation with a powerful military, led by bullies who couldn’t care less about taking care of US citizens or harming innocent civilians elsewhere.

I’m almost 70– this is not how I pictured my retirement years or my kids’ future.

I am 71. This is definitely not what I pictured for my adult sons’ future. I am increasingly pessimistic that the “American Dream” is getting further and further out of reach for them.

I agree, Maureen. And sadly, scarily, the idea of “common good” and the safety nets that many have needed in times of temporary setbacks are disappearing for everyone.

This is a fabulously smart (and, alas, rare) analysis of the longer-term risks. One is not optimistic that Trump or his gang have thought through any of them. Trump certainly has not, he is not capable of sustained thinking about anything.

This was a very helpful and informative column. Thank you

And just how much will this cost us? George W didn’t consider how to pay for that war. Trump is acting like our economy belongs to him, though I’m sure he never even balanced a checkbook.

I loved the comments on a Facebook posting about Trump saying the tankers are "floating on the bottom of the sea". Commenters noted that Trump needed a schooling on what the word "floating means"... like things can't float at the bottom of water!
