Thank you for this perceptive analysis. In my own mind, I had conflated removal of an authoritarian leader with the advent of democracy. You’ve addressed the huge hurdle that follows the removal, pointing out that it can take monumental effort to come to a solid foundation for ongoing democracy.

Last week, he said the receipts from the Venezuelan oil were $200 billion, now he says they are $250 billion, but the receipts for actual deposits in the foreign bank were about $13 billion. He’s confabulating. Again.

and where are those bank records, and whose account is it, and how does the US public know it and control it, as public funds should be controlled?

Too many unknowns ... I believe the voting results are completely unpredictable. I also believe what happens afterward is unpredictable, on both sides. The days unfold. Everybody talks. History is being written as it is created. We won't know until we know ... and even then we may not know! That is SO painful, frustrating, difficult, etc.

In recent days I referenced our municipal election (Sarnia, Ontario, Canada). It was a microcosm of the BIG election in the USA on Tuesday. For residents of my city, it was almost equally important. I am thrilled to share that a moderate liberal lady unseated a man who has been mayor for almost 40 years. After that length of time and given his obvious advanced age, he should have gracefully passed this time around but of course he didn't. Plus we had, as a mayoral candidate, a maga real estate agent who has been on city council and has copied trump to the n'th degree the past few years (right down to a red cap with msga ... make Sarnia great again). No imagination of his own at all ... he has been a true north trump worshipper. He's threatened constantly what he'll do, not if but when, he becomes mayor. And we had a couple of other newcomers on the ballot. Turned out our girl, Carrie, captured the number of votes (approx 13,000) that beat the total of the two men I described (7,000 and 5,000) and is our new mayor. Also interesting to me is that all 8 elected city councillors are people who are well mannered, well spoken, well educated, good listeners, always do their homework, smile a lot, and I bet they return their library books on time and wash out the empty containers before putting them in the recycle bin .... MY people!!! SO happy! SO hopeful! SO relieved!

It is important to remember that 300,000 metric tons of diesel translates into 110 million gallons at most. (1 metric ton = 310-350 US gallons.). The US uses more than 120 million gallons a day. Russia is probably not sending refined diesel, but rather heavy crude which means that the resulting diesel will be about one-third of that or 34 million gallons. 47 is selling out our collective soul way too cheap.
