When reading and digesting news commentary by Mary Geddry I find I need to first sit down and have a big mug of black coffee on hand.
The contrast between the responses of our country and Australia to the horrible shootings is bone chilling. Australia’s leader took rapid, intelligent and meaningful steps to address more gun control versus “Things happen…” uttered by President Trump.
I am deeply ashamed about how we are “negotiating” peace between Ukraine and Russia. The demands of the invader shouldn’t even enter the equation. The reputation of our country is swirling down the drain of history. The Arche de Trump idea is a monstrosity.
Nothing, absolutely nothing is being done in this country that does not benefit Twump and then trickling down to his loyalists. This essay today is an unbelievable mishmosh of America's dying days and I wonder about future elections.
Focusing on one likely Republican candidate for president: After reading Propublica's report on South Sudan's health crises accelerating since the demise of USAID, I wonder how Marco Rubio will hold his head up when the huge numbers in the death count bubble up in his 2028 campaign. Right now, babies, children, moms and dads are dying from Cholera in an epidemic that the United States was helping to squash, but resurged like a tidal wave after Rubio's orders to stop aid. Those precious souls, their grieving parents - already have so many marks against them: being born into poverty, never-ending wars, shitty climate change conditions and diseases ravaging their already tenuous living conditions. And now, the agency that was created under JFK, is gone. And with it, America's boots on the ground. Those boots belonged to doctors, not soldiers.
I'll add a 32 year old man with solid history of drug-addiction stabbed and murdered his parents, Rob Reiner and Michelle Reiner this weekend, and he is in jail. What a weekend for violence in a variety of forms. Glad there's a video of shopkeeper bringing down one of the killers in Australia. He got shot twice in the process, but is doing well.
Perfect Mary! I constantly wonder how we became a country that not only allows this madman and madness, but just carries on as if nothing is wrong. I am actively preparing myself for upcoming Holiday gatherings where none of this will even be mentioned, let alone actively discussed. We certainly don't want to make anyone uncomfortable....while our country burns. Thank you again for writing about the crazy to help me reaffirm I am not the only one experiencing this in real time.
This is a national mental health crisis akin to a drug-addicted, completely messed up son/daughter knifing his parents to death in their family home. It is pitiable, shameful, awful, and not always preventable. But the wounds don't have to be fatal for us, at least with the treatment options available to us now. Please, take heed, America, and act before the knife penetrates and mortally wounds us.
We cannot endure 3 more years of this. Something must be done soon to reel this complete wingnut in. I have so little faith anybody in our curr Government doing the right thing. They all seem to want to stage videos of themselves playing tough guys (and girls). It gust gets worse by the day.
I do still hold onto hope for the future of America even while the piling on of tragedy after tragedy took place and my soul deflated like a collapsed lung...Brown University and the Kash Patel screw up, Bondi Beach and the persons trying to rewrite the script with AI for who actually stopped the carnage while also getting seriously wounded for his heroism, Rob Reiner and his wife murdered and djt posting attacks onto Reiner for his opposition to djt...there seems no end in sight. Wajahat Ali revealed that there have been 388 mass shootings/killings in the US this year so far and we haven't even reached the end of this year. He calls us 'the United States of Amnesia' and it's accurate. Our attention span is short and if we aren't affected by certain experiences they haven't happened, but with the help of Mary Geddry, Heather Cox Richardson, Wajahat Ali, Allison Gil, Midas Touch, Jess Craven and so many more independents getting the information out and being the truth to power and more people getting activated, albeit slower than would be nice, and elections around the corner (everyone needs to make sure they are registered, have the correct documents if you need them AND VOTE!!) there is hope and reform with lots of education as the antidote! Everyone pretty much admits it is gonna get much worse before it gets better, but it will get better and 'WE ARE IN THIS TOGETHER'~Joyce Vance (she has a great book: Giving Up Is Unforgivable).
Looking back, we could have perhaps curtailed the violence somewhat if we had passed stricter gun laws after the Sandy Hook massacre of 20 innocent children and adults sitting in their classrooms. We didn't! We could have curtailed a re-election of Trump had the vote to impeach won victory after his January 6th treasonous actions. We didn't! Actions from our elected politician's should not be based on party but rather on what's right for the American people. I am tired of the blame that circles Washington in the name of financial donors and votes. If they cared so little in 2012 for the lives of school children what makes us think they will do anything but offer thoughts, prayers, and more blame for whoever is on the other side. We live in a dark time and desperately need leaders who will light the way.
Your words, Mary Geddry, descend upon me like unavoidable radioactive fallout. And the dRumpf- ian bombs are killing US democracy nonstop. I'm in no mood to celebrate this season. But, thank you, for your writing.

Well said.
Oh what a way to start the week. Hang on folks! The teacups are spinning on the mad hatter’s wild ride.

Very well said...

AMERICA “things can happen”; WHEN WILL YOU WAKE UP?

Trump injected himself into the Reiner tragedy by attributing the murders to TDS.
I enjoy reading the comments on this poor excuse of a government.
Very good as always. And it all needed saying bluntly.

Can’t wait to hear about the great work the FBI is doing to foil a leftwing terrorist plot planned for New Year’s Eve…

I will back our version of the Arc de Triomphe when he is alone in a repurposed Alligator Alcatraz.
