Our steps toward equality for all regardless of race, religion, and color of your skin have been erased in 7 short, but long, months. Trumps Path of Tears continues. Will school districts now conform to what they wouldn't or couldn't just months ago? Will the whole pilgrim dinner be reinvented and brought out to make some feel good again? Fool us once, shame on you. Fool us twice, shame on us. As for me I will share Indigenous peoples day always.
1984 gets truer every day, running alongside Brave New World. We’re pacifying ourselves to death with screens while the liberal consensus is demolished.
By coincidence, my husband and I visited the State Indian Museum in Sacramento today-a small venue with exhibits of the many indigenous peoples who populated the regions that became California, and their descendants.
Bucking Trump’s celebration of European conquest and supremacy, we learned California is rebuilding and recasting the institution as a cultural and history center, not an “Indian” museum that relegates the state’s native peoples to past relevance only.
Every decent decision that ignores the Trump regime’s agenda is a small victory.
Of course it should be acknowledged that Columbus didn’t discover anything. There were already millions of people living in the Americas when he arrived. And as get as being the first European, the Vikings beat him by at least 400 years.
Learning has and always will enlighten us. It makes what is given us a little better.Yet after how many years of ‘man’ being here the mother/mothers lose ground. Honor is lost or losing to petty pompous preferences. Little men need King of the Mountain games .
Truly conquering stands a shallow second besides the careful study of strengths available , it’s the innate qualities which recognized that can raise potential to the place of honor and gift nuture/mold the art (or artist) to master levels and quell selfish , the narrow , tendencies mankind’s shortsightedness labors under.
Progress should never be a Trail of Tears but a path paved purposefully with honoring strengths . And clever has never been manipulative as togetherness carries any load safer and far more efficiently.
A handshake once sufficed. Then rules were needed. Now laws are being broken. Amending is too time consuming , the rounded edges too hard for quality’s polish .
Admitting mistakes is deemed a sign of weakness versus a leadership lesson learned.
It’s double standards that reduces the game to blame vs fame.
It’s choice and what follows telling the true tale.
Thank you for an amazing article that tells the real story of Christopher Co!umbus. I am 88 years old and knew most of the real story, but not all that you wrote about.
It's so sad to see what is happening in our country now. I have seen a lot of terrible things happen in this country in my time, but this time scares me more than anything in the past.
Also in Howard Zinn’s PH of the U.S.: Columbus and his men used the indigenous as human transportation, hopping on their backs and whipping or killing them if they did not take them to any destination they commanded.
Columbus was a cruel, murderous, tyrannical monster to the indigenous people of Hispaniola resulting in mass misery and death. He is no hero for the ages.
I know we're not supposed to comment on the similarities between the behaviors of the trump administration and that of a certain fascist mid-twentieth century European regime for fear of being labeled antifa terrorists, but the creation of false historical narratives to forward a racist/nationalistic agenda was also sure up said fascist mid-twentieth century European regime's ally.
If Americans and Europeans had any real sense of history and morality, the Roman Catholic Church would no longer be standing. Behind all the slaughter of indigenous peoples in this country and around the world is the hand of that church and its representatives. I remember visiting the Acoma pueblo in NM. It's very beautiful...high on a mesa west of Albuquerque. During the tour my family and I took, we went into the Catholic church. The guide told us that the wood to build this church came from very far away and had to be dragged across the rough prairie and up to the top of the mesa. This was done under the direction of the Spanish conquistadors who basically told the natives that they had to do all that hauling and if they didn't, their arms would be cut off. What a legacy for that church! I also remember reading James Michener"s book Hawaii in high school and being appalled at what the Catholic missionaries did to the native Hawaiians to force their conversions. And here we are today, allowing ourselves to be lectured on morality by this institution's Pope and priests. It's a real sickness that we just have allowed to be sanitized by turning a blind eye.
It wasn't Catholic missionaries trying to convert the Hawaiians. It was Calvinist Protestants from New England. They came to do good and they did right well," as most of their descendants ended up extremely wealthy.
Well done, Mary. Horrified to learn about the cutting off of various appendages of people who annoyed Chris and his men. I pulled this, "Only one version of America deserves to be remembered, and it’s the one that flatters the regime. It’s narrative control. Trump’s government isn’t just rewriting the textbooks. It’s rewriting the archives."

Sobering, insightful and beautifully expressed.

I am heartsick. I fully expect he will get rid of MLK's birthday observance and install one for Charlie Kirk.
Juneteenth will be next
Point...!

This is brilliant. Thank you Mary. Stay safe. Xx
