I checked 'LIKE' but if there was a 'LOVE' box I would have checked it. Thank you Mary for having this additional columnist/essayist in your space. More excellence from your tribe ... wow!! The political situation makes me angry. The environmental/climate situation breaks my heart. Humans have created both. Yet we know that humans can also do good. The environment, however, has no choice but to respond to what humans perpetrate on it. You and the other 'green' folks, Jackson, must be very, very strong to endure what you see and know. Just as Mary has to have a steadfastness far beyond my own to be able to investigate and report what's happening in that sector. Grateful to all three 'Geddry' writers who are enriching me with your shares.

I'm glad you enjoyed the article! I'm not so sure about strong as so much that we simply must move forward, but thank you!

Only through organized resistance and putting safeguards in place that can't be so easily revoked by a government

Glad to read what you know. Sad to know what you're going through, personally. To get the attention needed I suggest two things: Mention some financials involved in allowing the collapse and abuse. Insurance industry was always going to be a canary. Get data about what's happening to individuals who must have it. Mortgage companies don't loan money to uninsured houses. Not the big $$$$, but the increased costs individuals and businesses are paying. It needs to be relatable to get more advocates. Second suggestion is to talk to grandchildren and young adults. The suffering of climate change will impact their lives. Encourage them to get in the face of their grandparents and parents who have power.

Carol, I have a young neighbor who lives a few doors down who is helping me in the garden for a few hours each week. I was delighted to know that she will be taking a class where they will be reading Braiding Sweet Grass. It is clear that she is well aware of the environmental and cultural problems relating to sustaining life on earth. I am trying in a small way to teach her something about gardening. My other garden helper is much older and has written a book about taking care of the earth and also one's inner self. She cannot stand living here under the regime and is moving to Portugal. I do not blame her, but I told her she would not escape climate change. The essay by Jackson is very detailed about what is happening. It makes me very angry. And I do not see easy solutions when everything is about short term greed. We try to take care of our little piece of the earth and also try to buy locally and support people here who are growing and raising food as best they can. I confess that I am thankful to be old as what is happening breaks my heart.

I’m with you on the struggle though I am retired. I live my life in public lands. There is a nonprofit job I’m aware in Steamboat Springs. Here’s the link. https://friendsoftheyampa.com/careers/

Thank you for the suggestion!

Hope it works out for you. Steamboat is a great place to live. Expensive but a great community. Geddry’s have some fans in this town.

VOTE 💙, love of our planet, surroundings, habitats has got to be recycling and strict thought of impact what ‘new’ does to the surround, impact in essence. Recycle, reuse, repurpose.

Conservation has to maintain the balance nature needs , it’s us as well.

Let's face it. Small countries like my own (UK) can make, despite opposition, every possible change towards environmental stability but when we look at the world picture we will make little change. China, one of the biggest polluters, is at least putting billions into wind and solar power while still building coal power stations. Trump's USA on the other hand is decrying renewables in favour of more oil, more coal, fewer restrictions on air and water quality, etc., etc. and at the same time destroying the organisations that monitor the results. I want to leave a planet that my great-grandchildren can inhabit without compromise. My grandchildren are already suffering from the (in)activity of my generation.

China seems to be hedging their bets, but even I have to admit that it's preferable to what the U.S. is doing at the moment. And yes, changes will not provide long-term solutions unless there's a unified global movement
