Thank you again for the hopeful news about coral reefs, giraffes, and your precious family.
I have an update for your readers about something you wrote about a few weeks back. The campaign to raise money to "Save Moon Camp" in Big Bear Valley California has been closed. They received a 5.5 million dollar donation from Anna and Greg Brockman, (tech millionaires) which will be enough to purchase the land and make needed improvements. This is the good news. The bad news is that Jackie, the celebrity mama eagle, is at a raptor rehab center. She was found on the ground by caring humans who stayed with her for hours trying to find someone who could come and help. Finally the fire department was able to get ahold of an animal rescue group. Jackie is anemic and her kidney function is low. An eagle (named Spirit) at a nearby zoo donated blood for a transfusion. The raptor center will give another update tomorrow about her condition.
I still am amazed by the rescue story. The eagle lovers who found her just hung out and tried to get help for hours late in the night. If they hadn't come across her, I'm convinced that she would have just disappeared, to the extreme disappointment of her worldwide fan base. I have no idea how it will be if and when they release her. The human interference has to make a difference in the course the story takes. Hopefully we will get to that point! The Monday update was positive though.
Thank you for this comment, Gillian. I have been meaning to respond to it. I am working on another piece and this comment sparked an idea to incorporate an update into that. Readers like you really help to keep the work alive.
What happened? I enjoyed your political behind the scene reporting so I subscribed to help finance your work. Now I am getting stories about Ezra? I did not expect or want this. Please go back to your political reporting!
Take a breath. Shanley posts an essay about something hopeful every Sunday.
And all the rest of her readers DO want to hear about Ezra, the other children and the fairy garden. Perhaps scroll back and read about the hardship this little family has recently overcome with the help of this very community.
Shanley will be back to political analysis directly.
Thank you, KatCA! I don't know that I can full describe the feeling I get from this comment, but I feel truly defended and valued for each part of my strange musings.
Mary provides political report every morning ... sometimes more often! Shanley provides reporting about stories that touch our hearts (and many or most of us need and appreciate that) and she often weaves them into world and political conditions. If you don't want to read Shanley's essays then I say each to their own! Stick with Mary's daily essay. But please realize and understand that Shanley is a valued part of this Substack for other subscribers and readers.
Laurie, thank you for this comment. It means so much that my voice is valuable to people. I wish I could share the full scope of what that means to me, but that would quickly turn into it's own essay. Let's just say, I haven't always been the best and knowing my own worth, but the more I get to engage with this community the more I can see.
