Evidence based, logical and realistic about what is happening and what it means: Mary provides the kind of analysis and reporting that “legacy” media has all but abandoned. And more crucial than ever. And entertaining as well!
Which brings to mind an article a friend sent me written by “conservative” mouthpiece Helen Andrews, in which the author concludes females cannot be good lawyers because they bring emotion over logic to the issues. Whoa! How about righteous indignation based on clear-eyed truth-telling and reason, which seems to be an important attribute of women who will be key to saving this country? Thinking of Mary, Heather, Joyce…a very long list can be constructed in minutes.
One of your best Mary! You really have a way with words.
Just imagine if a half million armed citizens marched on Washington. The military couldn't kill all of them short of calling in airstrikes that would also destroy the White House and Capitol. Interesting thought experiment in the most heavily armed country in the world.
I am loathe to suggest we have reached a tipping point. Maybe Churchill’s comment is best. A tough road lies ahead (in his case WWII): “This is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning.”
To the 7M who marched, Bravo. It is a step. But in this, we are woke. And, we are reclaiming our flag from MAGA’s corruption. It is so heartening to see the Flag waved proudly aloft juxtaposed to a guy in a Frog suit. Kudos to Portland.
TY Mary , John beat me to it! I copied the section ( one of the paragraphs I loved best) and suggested in comments people tune onto Substack ..so many don’t know about it yet! 🤷♀️
We have good but far less good journalism than yesteryears.
Who are we? You've outlined it beautifully, Mary, and the choice is ours. The famous line comes to mind, "Give me liberty or give me death" and I think those words reflect the voices of the American people on Saturday, No King's Day, in chants echoing the same paraphrased words of the first words and the last part would be the death of democracy as we know it. Who are we? I hope we can answer that clearly soon!
I have been an active member of several groups who for YEARS have been warning the public about the Christian fascism bubbling beneath the surface and organizing itself for years to take over government. Friends and relatives treated my often expressed concerns with a smile and tolerance, but often said I was exaggerating. Religious beliefs in their minds were something you really didn't go after in polite company. Too polite company, it seems, because our national hesitation to call out anything that has to do with religion has allowed the monster to creep into all the closets. Now we are wringing our hands over the obvious loss of separation of church and state. There is a sign carried on street corners around here by a local church that says, "All knees will Bow to Christ the king". It looks like they are getting their way, and the church state groups are swamped with calls.

Keep up this vital work! And thank you again!

Very well put, brava.

I love that no matter how frightening your columns can be, you finish with hope and faith in the possibility of a better future
