The president of the United States spent part of Sunday night posting an AI-generated video that appeared to show one of Iran’s most important oil hubs being blown to pieces, even though the United States military says it did not actually attack that island. Vice President JD Vance later explained that Trump was “sending a message,” which is apparently what we’re calling synthetic footage of imaginary military strikes during an actual war now. Meanwhile, Google Maps has begun calling Lake Ontario “Lake America” for American users, Trump has personally asked Apple to follow along, and Congress returned from a five-week recess today because somebody eventually remembered the federal government needs funding. It’s Monday in America, and apparently everyone is having trouble with maps. Which, unfortunately, brings me naturally to my own weekend.
Well folks, I’m back from my trip. It was a good time, except that I put the wrong destination into the GPS and got us completely lost. Living with ADHD is always an adventure. That said, now we’re home, and I packed basically everything we could ever need, which turns out to be basically everything in our entire house, so today I must put it all back together. But golly was I prepared. I brought a tape measure, you know, just in case I needed to measure a weird animal I found or something. I brought super glue, just in case someone got a big owie that a Band-Aid simply wouldn’t cover, and I also brought Band-Aids. I had it all, gas medicine, hair-care products, bug spray, sunscreen, every kind of hydration you can think of, every food item in our kitchen, and if you could think of a use for it, I had it. Even the things nobody could think of a use for except me. But we didn’t need for a thing while we were away.
So today I am putting our house back together, which was just in time for our new dryer!!! It’s here, folks. I can officially dry my clothing without traveling to Mom’s house, which, as a woman who is nearly 30, feels good. Ezra is equally thrilled to be home and overjoyed to be crawling freely again, with no evil straps keeping him confined to his seat, while my daughter is simply relaxing because she takes after her father and needs a little decompression when she has been required to spend too much time around other people, even when those people are her parents and her brother.
We’re back, Mom is still traveling, and we do apologize for being away. The one downside of being a mother-daughter journalism team is that when there are important family functions, we can’t really cover for each other because, you know, we both have to attend them. Fortunately for journalism, the administration did not take a break from being a trash heap, which brings me naturally to today’s news.
The United States and Iran are shooting at each other again after several weeks of relative quiet, and because nothing makes the global economy feel secure quite like explosions beside one of the most important oil corridors on Earth, crude prices immediately climbed. U.S. forces struck two Iranian rocket launchers on Larak Island in the Strait of Hormuz on Sunday, saying Iranian forces were preparing for operations that threatened shipping through the waterway. Iranian state media says two people were killed and several others wounded. Iran then retaliated against U.S. military targets in the region, with Jordan reporting intercepted missiles and the United Arab Emirates reporting the interception of an Iranian drone.
Trump responded Monday by promising that if Iran continued attacking American forces, the United States would “hit them hard.”
This would already be a fairly significant escalation six months into a conflict that has repeatedly threatened the flow of global energy, but Trump decided reality required supplemental material, so he also posted an AI-generated video depicting Iran’s Kharg Island oil hub being destroyed and captioned it as though the attack had actually occurred. It had not.
A U.S. official confirmed Monday that American forces did not attack Kharg Island, which historically handles roughly 90 percent of Iran’s oil exports, and Vance later explained that the president had merely been “sending a message.” Perhaps Hallmark has expanded its product line.
The oil market, which unfortunately has to price things according to the possibility that presidents occasionally mean the things they post online, was less amused. Brent crude settled Monday at $90.49 per barrel after reaching $91.52 during trading, while West Texas Intermediate settled at $85.76. American gasoline prices have remained above $4 a gallon through August, leaving consumers once again paying for geopolitical brinkmanship at the pump.
Which makes the administration’s other enormous oil announcement especially interesting, because Trump says the United States has now secured access to 65 billion barrels of Venezuelan oil. The agreement announced over the weekend involves 17 Venezuelan oil fields and a new joint venture with North America Blue Energy Partners. According to the details released so far, the arrangement could last 100 years, with the United States receiving 55 percent of effective output from the fields.
Trump has called it the “biggest oil deal in world history.”
There are, naturally, a few details. Venezuela’s oil infrastructure has deteriorated after years of underinvestment, developing these fields would require enormous sums of money, many of the actual financial and operational terms remain undisclosed, and energy experts have cautioned that Americans should not expect 65 billion barrels of theoretical oil sitting beneath Venezuelan soil to magically turn into cheap gasoline next Tuesday. So the current American energy strategy appears to involve fighting Iran near the Strait of Hormuz while signing a century-long agreement for Venezuelan oil and assuring Americans that affordability will arrive eventually. We are diversifying.
Back in Washington, Congress has also returned to work today after a five-week recess, where lawmakers discovered the government remains stubbornly dependent upon lawmakers occasionally funding it. The Senate has already passed a temporary government funding package by a remarkably bipartisan 90-to-6 vote, which would keep federal agencies operating into early December. The House now has to approve it, and Republican leadership is expected to try to move the measure quickly before everyone becomes completely consumed by the midterm elections.
There are policy disputes buried inside the package, including restrictions involving Border Patrol funding transfers and a delay involving intoxicating hemp products, but perhaps the most spiritually congressional detail is that House Republicans also plan to spend some of their newly returned legislative energy voting on a resolution condemning socialism.
The federal government may be approaching another funding deadline, gasoline is above four dollars, American forces are exchanging fire with Iran, and healthcare systems are struggling across rural America, but rest assured, Congress has located the real emergency. An ideology resolution.
Healthcare, however, actually does have some meaningful news today, and this one deserves a little nuance because the money being distributed is real, substantial and potentially very useful. The Trump administration announced today that Arkansas will receive $149.3 million through the Rural Health Transformation Program, funding that will go toward ambulances, telehealth, remote patient monitoring, imaging equipment, emergency teleconsultations, generators, specialty services and healthcare workforce programs.
That follows recent announcements of roughly $122 million for Virginia, $93.3 million for Georgia and $160 million for Alaska, part of the $50 billion rural-health program created in the administration’s 2025 tax-and-spending law. Those investments could genuinely improve care, particularly in communities where one ambulance, one imaging machine or one additional specialist can determine whether someone receives treatment near home or drives several hours to find it.
The uncomfortable part is what sits beside the program. The Congressional Budget Office estimates that the same 2025 law will reduce projected federal Medicaid spending by roughly $1.2 trillion between 2026 and 2035. KFF has estimated that approximately $137 billion of the Medicaid reductions could fall on rural areas over a decade, substantially more than the $50 billion being distributed through the temporary rural-health fund, although KFF has also cautioned that directly comparing individual grants with Medicaid losses can oversimplify how the policies operate.
In other words, some rural hospitals are receiving money to purchase better equipment while simultaneously preparing for a future in which fewer patients have Medicaid coverage. Both things can be true. The grants can be good, the ambulances can be desperately needed, the telehealth programs can save lives, and we can still ask whether pouring $50 billion into rural healthcare transformation while removing far more from the insurance program rural hospitals depend upon constitutes transformation or very expensive rearranging.
Then there is the Grand Canyon, where the scale of Saturday’s flash flooding is becoming clearer and considerably more heartbreaking. At least two people are now confirmed dead and approximately 15 remain missing or unaccounted for after floodwaters tore through Bright Angel Canyon and the Phantom Ranch area. Search and recovery operations continue while park officials try to account for hikers and backpackers who may have been along the North Kaibab Trail or near Bright Angel Creek when the water came through.
The physical destruction is extraordinary. Officials estimate roughly 40 percent of the 12.5-mile Transcanyon Waterline has been damaged or destroyed, knocking out the only pipeline supplying much of the park’s water and forcing Stage 4 restrictions on the South Rim. Beginning today, overnight lodging inside the park has been halted, campers are facing severe water restrictions, and visitors are being asked to reconsider travel while crews attempt to understand the full extent of the damage.
The pipeline was already undergoing a roughly $200 million reconstruction project after decades of failures. Now large portions of it have to be found underneath what the canyon decided to move. The immediate cause was an intense monsoon storm, but the flood comes during a summer in which unusually moisture-rich conditions across the West have repeatedly demonstrated what happens when powerful weather systems meet a warming atmosphere capable of carrying more water. No single disaster should be reduced to one climate explanation, but neither should these events be treated as though they are occurring in the same environmental conditions our infrastructure was designed around decades ago.
That’s where we are this Monday. I am unpacking approximately 47 bags because my brain decided one overnight family trip required the logistical preparation of a minor military operation. Congress is trying to keep the federal government operating. The Park Service is trying to rebuild a water system. Rural hospitals are trying to build something sustainable out of new grants and looming Medicaid losses. Oil traders are trying to determine which presidential posts represent actual military operations and which are AI-generated messages, while Google is busy changing the name of a lake because apparently maps have become another branch of American foreign policy.
And somewhere in the middle of all of this, my new dryer is humming, Ezra is crawling across his own floor again, my daughter is quietly decompressing, and I am putting our little house back where everything belongs.
There’s a difference between putting something back together and simply rearranging it until it looks different. I suspect we are going to spend a lot of time figuring out which one America is doing.
