Commenting from the UK, the Speaker has the authority to send Congress home whenever he likes?? Does anyone think that this is totally ludicrous? He also seems to have the authority to refuse to sign in a newly elected Representative because he doesn't like the way she will vote. What's wrong with set terms when Congress sits and a legal requirement to sign in newly elected members?
I now read that if the Mid Terms go badly for the GOP, the Speaker may simply refuse to sign in the new Representatives or Senators. You guys have a weird form of "democracy".
As a frustrated Yank, I agree with you wholeheartedly! Evidently these rules have always been there, but we hadn't noticed until our Republican Party went full-MAGA. But I am pretty sure Senate (upper half of Congress) is still in session.
Wouldn't it be nice if we could all abdicate our responsibilities on a whim? But we are wise enough to know better. Too bad we do not have a government who takes its responsibilities to We the People seriously. Vote them all out!
Your picture includes five joyful human beings and one very serious dog. I thought maybe he understands he’s the guardian who protects the joyful people, a very demanding job in today’s world.
Another excellent post, Shanley. I love the "homefront" aspect of your posts -- and you do a great job of integrating household news and observations with our political nightmare. Keep writing.
Mary, I so enjoy your writing, especially when you write about your family and the triumphs and catastrophes of daily life. It gives me a moment of respite from the constant assault from Washington. Keep up the good work!
Thank you for your updates from the home front, Shanley! A pleasure to read. I'd have loved to have played that "magnet" trick on my own husband. And OMG, is Ezra able to climb out of his playpen now? 😲 Whatta guy!

Thank you for your daily witness. It is helpful in little and in big ways during these very stressful days.
