If Congress and SCOTUS does not fix this problem, this real problem of Fourth Amendment "pick and choose and make it your own" menu of OUR rights, we are doomed. This is the last straw. A police agency, of all things, deciding how to apply search and seizure, not through the application of adjudicated decisions but through their own simplistic method and memo, is horrifying. The Constitution has become so elastic with SCOTUS (including deciding that "militia" means "individual" when rewriting the Second Amendment for the good ol' boys), as to begin to mean nothing. I will use your script but add some angry words and call several red state Republicans. I will leave messages and write emails. I am mad as hell and I'm not going to take it any more.
It is so devastating. I live less than a mile away from where Renee Good was killed. I worry constantly about friends and family here in the Mpls area. My Representative is Ilhan Omar who has been subjected to Trump's repeated attacks. My Senators are Amy Klobuchar and Tina Smith, both of whom have openly been against ICE. I would recommend getting the phone numbers of those who openly support MAGA policies. Here in MN that would be Emmer, Stauber, Fischbach, Finstad.
RIGHT ON, RIGHT ON, RIGHT ON!!!! Make calls, it's not complicated. House already voted for the DHS/ICE funding appropriations bill, no surprise, but it goes to the senate this next week and SCHUMER IS ON BOARD WITH THE FUNDING....Schumer: 1-202-224-6542, call until his phone lines explode and call your senators, too...Thank You, so much Mary!!
'Here is the lie authoritarian movements sell early: you can’t do anything. They want you exhausted. Overwhelmed.... And if you’re thinking, I’m just one person, remember this: the whole architecture of impunity depends on the public being silent.'
From the outside, ICE's barbaric treatment of US citizens, with total impunity, betrays a strategy whose main purpose appears to be voter suppression - intimidate the population into staying away from the polling booths at the midterms and/or provoke violent resistance as an excuse to invoke the Insurrection Act.
Clearly, dissent must not resort to violence. Gandhi's principle of 'satyagraha' or non-violent resistance should be key. Minnesota's stay at home from work, school and shopping 'ICE Out Day' shows the way. And yes, 'make it your turn'!
And when this ICE nightmare is finally over, all those responsible, all those who participated and enabled it to take place must be made to understand that they too will be held to account and justice will be served.
We.The.People. are not who this current administration is, nor is there any condoning them who are. But we can forgive ignorance and strive harder to educate . Race, bias, religion and so many issues have always been a hurdle for freedoms, we may pretend it’s over ..until someone , or often whole systems , act differently. Brings up ,again, the point that truth prevails , and comfort often wears the mask of deceit.
This has been going on for 15 years. I asked how many more needed to die? How many more have to cloak their disgust, their knowledge. Those who have given their oath, broken it, have far more than us to answer to.
But we are the only ones who can stop it.
Not most of our Supreme Court..or Congress..nor the sitting President himself …he has made a mockery of the highest office the US could bestow . But when the world recoiled, or snickered, or called out -even eloquent truth- they still stood by their lie , their lies…defiantly.
