In a world where we are inundated with stories filled with people expressing so much hate and lack of compassion of late, this is a wonderful, beautiful and important reminder for us all.
A month or two ago I read about people doing this around Portland and there was a mention of a plan to build a frog crossing culvert under a highway there.
What a great column! I once encountered a froggie migration on a dark, rainy night. I was frantic because there was no possibility of avoiding them. It happened many years ago and haunts me still.
Such a beautiful hope-filled story Shanley!!! Every week I assure myself our inept leadership, inability to acknowledge that interconnectedness and life can't be separated, and profit-above-all-else motives can't get any worse and then guess what! In the meantime, these stories continue to be a lifeline. I taught landscape architecture, sustainable design, and environmental studies at the University of Nebraska for over 26 years. Six years into retirement, I can't fathom how difficult it would be to stay hopeful and positive in front of students day after day in 2026. All I know is, I would be sharing every one of your stories every chance I got... we have to start somewhere! Thank you!!!
I saw this as a news article yesterday in our local (Seattle) newspaper. My first thought after reading it was "I hope Shanley sees this--I'd love to see her take on it." And now I have, and as usual you did not disappoint. Thank You!
Faced with the seeming determination of so many to favor asphalt and seizure of public lands for the rape of resources, your hopeful writings, Shanley, bring a few moments of peace to chaotic days. Thank you.
Hope. It's such an odd thing. It can lift you up, energize you and it can hammer you when it gets dashed. But hope is strength and I HOPE that this example is what WE as humans can do. Not just for frogs but for everything... humans, animals, the environment... our lovely planet. Teaching our children as these people have done. This morning I have a little more hope after reading this. Thank you.

I couldn't love this more. Thank you for the reminder that good is still here shining it's hopeful light.
"Not because it is glamorous, which I regret to inform you, it is not."
Selflessness: Sounds like the very definition of glamour to me...

The toad was in the path in the path. My little grandson saved it. 😌
Thank you!
Thank you…
