When fourth graders learned that two beloved bald eagles could lose part of their habitat, they answered with letters, lemonade, and the purest form of hope.
A wonderful story that I'm so glad you shared. I don't watch those eagles all the time but I do click in occasionally. I truly hope that what these children are doing, along with others. can save that beautiful stretch of land and the eagles nesting site!
I have been watching Jackie and Shadow's livestream for three years now, and the eagle family which this season includes chicks Sandy and Luna (SO adorable) never fails to lift my spirits. If you haven't shared this wonderful post on the FOBBY (Friends of Big Bear Valley) website or Facebook page, it would be a welcome addition. The amount needed to purchase the Moon Camp property is ten million dollars. As of today they just passed the 3 million dollar mark. Thousands of folks all over the world watch as Jackie and Shadow raise their families, and I feel certain that your post with its heartfelt story/message would be yet another impetus for people everywhere to donate to this wonderful cause.
Yay for the children and their teacher in Danville! Heros, everyone of them.....and thank you Shanley for helping to spread the word. Your writing, as always, shows such empathy and sensitivity.
I've been watching Jackie and Shadow for years, years where no eggs hatched or no chicks survived, and years like this year when Sandy and Luna are almost as big as their parents and getting ready to fledge. I love the nest cam (Big Bear Eagle Cam 1) because the lake is so beautiful spread out behind the nest, and we get to see eagle life up close and personal. The 24-7 volunteer tech team will zoom in when the parents are feeding the chicks. It's wonderful that the 4th graders are working to save Moon Camp! Third-graders get to help name the eagle chicks (during the years that they make it), so perhaps these now 4th graders were involved last year. Usually when I tune into the livestream, there are more than 15,000 people watching, from all over the world. I'm hoping the appeal for funds will be successful. Thank you, Jackie and Shadow, for the years of delight you have given your world-wide fanbase, and for inspiring these kids to take action.
Blessings to all teachers and parents (etc) who show the workings of nature to children while their hearts, minds and spirit are still open to it. This world is their future. I saw a sign in our Humane Society that said "You can't help all the cats & dogs, but for the ones who do receive your help it means everything". That applies across the board in life!
The problem with our country today is that our billionaires, the Epstein elite, don't know what to do with their money.
There are no possessions they can't buy, so acquisition of power, the ability to control people is about the only thing left for them to get. For a long time they've taken their excess and invested it into other money-making acquisitions. They have no incentives to spend their wealth making the lives of fellow Americans better. Gaining power and getting more money are the only things they have left to get.
Sooooo, things are the way they are and our future looks like things will only get more so. What we, the people who don't like the way things are today, need to do is to create incentives for billionaires to do better.
If we get a blue wave and if we get the opportunity to create significant change, then we should take it. One solution might be for us to completely change our tax code. Set the highest rate at 95%. OK, that's not a new idea, but what we might do differently is allow high earners a way to not pay that tax on all of their money by giving them an opportunity to spend some of their money making things better for Americans.
It would work like this: any money they spend on America will be matched by a multiple of that money that is exempt from income tax. So if the multiple is 1.5, then if they spend $100M on good things, then they will have $150M that will not be taxed.
Good things could be stuff like increasing wages for the people they employ. Say that the increased wages cost them X, then they would have 1.5 times X that they don't pay taxes on. They could buy health care for their employees, or build hospitals and schools and bridges and roads.
The multiplier would need to be determined by economists, and there would need to be restrictions and limits, but the basic idea is that we could make things better by having the people who own most of our economy allocate resources to make Americans' lives better, while at the same time increasing their wealth (which is something we know they like to do).
We would need to pass and enforce strong bribery and corruption laws to make this work. ( I think we need to do that anyway.) Anyone caught gaming the system would get the ability to participate revoked. They would just have to pay the 95% tax rate.
"The original intelligence of the soul" is the kind of sentence that reorganizes how I read everything else for the next week, and I expect to be living with it longer than that. You drew the line between innocence and naivete exactly where it needed drawing. And the small ecological hinge — that a nest is not a tree — is the same insight rendered in feathers and water. Thank you for the Danville children, the eagles, and the eye drops. The whole household dispatch belongs to the piece; it is part of how you earn the closing.

Tears.
I hope my grandbabies have teachers that listen and let the kids express themselves.
And then support them to do so.
Thank you for sharing this poignant message.
Where is the link or QR code to support them? Please!

This is a lovely story. I look at the eagles every day. They still need money to prevent this nonsense of developing this area.

Crying. You’ve written a profoundly touching and wise piece. I’m sharing it widely. THANK YOU! ❤️
How much have they raised and how can we contribute?
Here is the link to donate! https://savemooncamp.org/donate-now/#donate_now I believe they have raised just over 3 million so far.
Please help Jackie and shadow by donating to their organization. All money raised goes to purchase the land. The website is https://friendsofbigbearvalley.org/eagles/
