At the very least, our Dem leaders should be holding weekly press conferences listing the egregious assaults on our country by Trump and his cohorts. Make it hard for the average citizen to turn away from the damage being done. Trump/Miller/Vought et. al. are making the abnormal appear normal by grinding us down with the sheer volume of their atrocities. Enough!
I don't know why, but the demolition of the East Wing has really crossed some bitter line in me. It pains me to see it. Anyone who ever doubted he wasn't going to be an authoritarian tyrant, should be convinced by now. I would think even MAGA will take issue with this. Maybe, maybe not.
It truly hurts my heart to see it being torn down. What's to stop him from tearing down the rest of it? Will he bulldoze the MLK monument for a Trump '28 coffee kiosk? He could do it.
The comments I've seen from MAGAts are in favor of the Monstrosity. They believe Trump when he says he and his "friends" are paying for it, using no taxpayer dollars. They seem to have the idea it puts the US on a par with Windsor Castle, Versailles, and the Winter Palace, all in one. They repeat Trump's BS about "Every president changes the White House."
I'm also thinking they admire the Neo-Gilded Age. They admire (!) Trump’s fake gold trashery, and maybe envy it. Has anyone checked Home Depot's stock / sales of the gold-colored plastic doodads? They'd look spectacular on fake wood paneling in a trailer. Really dress the place up.
I’m amazed Trump didn’t have the wood cut into small cubes and sold on Home Shopping Network as “a one-of-a-kind memento of the White House East Wing made available by the Big, Beautiful Donald J Trump Golden Ballroom, the finest in the history of the world!”
I agree it actually brought tears of fury and heartbreak . He’s a destroyer of everything within his greedy grasp . The destruction with zero authority of the East Wing is a bridge too far
Mary, I think you should go to the dentist more often. Or maybe skip the dentist altogether and go straight to the painkillers! Your column today was magnificent. It chronicled perfectly the irony, absurdity, and downright irreality this
Like a spoiled child or a demented adult, Trump just keeps lumbering on. He has broken every system and program, and now building, that we never thought possible. If we don't have built-in laws to stop him, as Jamie Raskin and others have professed, it only speaks to the complete naiveté of those who wrote the original laws and those who are remiss in amending them. We must regain the house and votes to put safeguards into place that will send another "pretender" into oblivion. When the smoke clears from the demolition, I hope Democrats will hold a press conference in front of the shambles and itemize every thing he has demolished every day. Call it a "Jeff Merkley moment" but do it!
I think Trump, like Hitler, was a once-in-250-years disaster. Nonetheless, it’s prudent to close every loophole he exploited on the off chance another sociopathic narcissist manages to get into the Oval Office.
If (and hopefully not when) he collects the $230M from our treasury, he says he will donate it to charity "or something"......we all know what that something is don't we?
We the Taxpayers will pay for the Monstrosity. Who'll fund the electric bill? The food bill? The waitstaff? The cleaning and maintenance? Yeh. Donors my ass.
The only part I'd volunteer for is donating money for its demolition. And a rebuild of the East Wing.
May Trump end up like Joe Kennedy, Sr - helpless but living long enough to witness the destruction around him.
I don’t want Trump to live long, painfully or otherwise. Someone else is already writing his speeches and social media posts, probably Stephen Miller, the shadow president. His handlers will keep rolling out the empty shell of his body as long as he can read a few words off a teleprompter.

And the grift and corruption go on and on ad nauseum.....

You would think that parts would be worth saving. Even the lumber would have been meaningful and re-used elsewhere.

My thinking exactly!
