Yikes! I am having some “feelings” that I believed I would never have in a Democracy. I wish I could discuss it with my long dead 8th grade Civics teacher and high school Government teacher. They are long dead but have guided me throughout my life. They’d have a lot to say. I’m listening for their thoughts from the other side.
Rubber stamping…stampeding…even laughing..I muse wildst I can , Trumps message.. ‘do not show your teeth or tongue’ ..authoritarianism has begun.
One more laugh is left though and Mary -you were outdone -by a parading black horse giving the best fitting summation parading past Putin ‘s ‘little donny ‘ ….SHIT!
Your last paragraphs astutely sum up the stakes. Minority rule doesn’t need a broad consensus, just alignment of consolidated government and private power to control the major levers of communication, money and state force. Trump/MAGA, media and social media conglomerates, tech titans, and private equity are fast effecting that reality.
Kimmel was put on indefinite suspension for saying that MAGA was hoping against hope that the shooter would not be one of theirs, so they could weaponize it. (paraphrasing) I remember, right after Trump won the election, Kimmel's monologue was particularly emotional, and for good reason. He managed to get in a few jokes but ended with "yeah, we'll see how funny this is in seven months" He couldn't have been more prescient
Meanwhile the FCC chair is considering eliminating the rule that any one company cannot own more than 38% of all broadcast media. You know where this is going -- the only media will be TRUMP TV...where clapping is mandatory and boos are a felony.
Meanwhile, satire is still the best way to poke fun and stimulate conversation...ironically, it's the approach Charlie Kirk advocated.

I'm proud to be labeled antifa as my dad was when he fought fascism in WWII. Glad he's not alive to see the clusterfuck America has become.
Ditto!

I missed this one when it first came out. Spot on analysis…the Mark Twain quote is so true!
We need a Substack for the airwaves.
