Our daughter is an emergency & critical care doctor in Greenville, SC, one town over from their measles epicenter of Spartanburg. When this outbreak started last year, the health dept had local vaccination units deployed, but only had a few people show up to get vaxxed. I’m 68, and I guess the young parents nowadays don’t have a clue how dangerous measles and other preventable diseases can be. BTW, for two years prior to this new job, our daughter did her medical fellowship at Oregon State Health in Portland. We visited for a month in late 2024 and love the area
Thank you. Failure to vaccinate children is not merely neglected, it is child abuse. Willfully letting a child contract every childhood disease and spend a significant portion of their developmental years ill with one disease after another is not love; it is self absorption. If you are a vaccine denier, get over yourself and treat your child with some human kindness.
Please, please keep writing, posting and asking readers to do the same. We cannot allow the same level of stupidity and intransigence of the Covid fiasco drag us back to the 16th, 17th, 18th and 19th centuries levels of death and despair due to easily preventable control of transmissible diseases. We believe we have become an enlightened society. Our current health practices bring us below the level of the early Asian dynasties where people took baths and kept themselves clean!
I'm an old lady now but I got measles when I was 6. It was not fun. But I survived. Many kids didn't. As soon as there was a vaccine, I got it and every other one offered. Vaccines are one of the greatest achievements of modern medicine. In the "before vaccine times" parents would hold measles and chicken pox "parties" so all the kids in the neighborhood would get infections over with all at once and then have immunity. What a gift it was when a simple vaccine was developed. About 15 years ago or so, I invited Kennedy to present a lecture in Ashland. The Organic Standard was about to be passed and he was a great proponent of organic food. But shortly after his dynamic talk, he started to "talk crazy." What a disappointment. Now he's just off the rails.
I had measles when I was 6. I nearly died. I remember sitting in a bathtub loaded with ice cubes, and my mother trying to lower my temperature below 105.5, in a rural area, a long way from a doctor. She managed. The headache was horrid. The lifelong consequence was profound hearing loss at 15, through a triggered autoimmune response. I got hearing aids at 22. I am now 68, and have had a good life. The hearing technology is a life saver. Life would have been a huge amount better without that burden. For God's sake, immunize your kids. My parents couldn't back then in 1964 in rural Canada. You can now. Please. Measles is awful. This is an easy one.
The truth is that nothing is going to happen until some Congresspersons grandchild goes blind or dies from it. I'm not wishing ill on anyone but, it WILL happen. And then they'll all be shocked and horrified and suddenly it's not some kid in some low income area but their own and it will be awful, and preventable. Just like Trump is destroying America, he's killing outright. It's got to stop but it won't until the disease comes home.
Wonderful treatise on vaccination Shanley. Like a hand on your shoulder in the dark you say. Scientific information, presented with comprehensive documentation by a discerning author will win the argument. Repetition is always always powerful when your research has been convincing to you. Thank you.
I agree!!! Here's what I don't understand. Why do the Democrats not present a thought-out plan to provide the healthy practices that you wrote about above, AND describe to voters a detailed, sustainable and affordable health insurance plan that they have on offer. Seems like all I hear is trump and maga are full of hate and ruining the country (which they are) but no convincing plan that Democrats have created to address the everyday issues that people are struggling with. I'm tired now of their righteous indignation that is all talk talk talk and no results-based action NOW, while the crimes are being committed daily, and no credible and realistic strategies detailing how Democrats will provide a better future from all this broken rubble. This is an opportunity for a turning point!

I wonder what goes on in a parent’s mind while they watch their child potentially dying because they don’t believe in vaccines.
I’ve seen it. They call it “the will of god”
In a family of nurses was said…the hardest words to say simply …as they begged for the Covid shot ..”Im sorry its too late now”
😔

Happening in the UK too. An outbreak in West London reported this weekend…
