There is no check big enough that we can write to help heal the family of Johan Guerrero, 26, killed by ICE in Maine with his 3 year old daughter in the car. But we can vote. For a representative who will go to Congress and propose a bill to curb the authority of those goons with guns. I hope your salamander heals and finds her way back to her underground burrow by the creek. That would be hope full.

Stumbling upon injured wildlife on walks with my Springer has been a recurring theme of late; a great deal of time has been spent making injured creatures comfortable while waiting upon Animal Control. After several of these experiences this summer, just yesterday I came across not one but two injured birds. Like you, I am still learning that there are limits to what I can do when this happens and that the guilt I experience because these limits prevent me from solving the problem…healing the bird….is not guilt that I can own. For me this is a difficult lesson.
So thank you for this perfectly timed piece that I will take with me on my future encounters with injured wildlife and other harm and damage I did not cause but could have a hand in repairing. ❤️
I think (looking back on my experience with my kids when they were young) there seems to be a natural exchange of moral enlightenment between parents and children...
You don't always know it at the time but you wind up learning as much (or more) from your kids, as you wind up teaching them--particularly if you're really paying attention and not just speaking or acting reflexively...
Some of your essays have a quality of wondering out loud about everything-- a quality that has a schedule of its own; a presence that seems, sometimes, to disappear entirely when parental concern or just plain emotion enters into the equation.
Your pieces, and this one is a good example, also have a strong current of poetry running through them... All-in-all, well worth reading, especially the worldly wisdom that some things broken--whether accidentally or deliberately--can never be put right, and that fixing what's broken, without initially muddying up the waters by asking too many questions about the cause, is one of the enduring qualities of human beings...

For me personally this came exactly when needed.
