It would be very satisfying to see this week’s SCOTUS decision on campaign finance buried under landslide wins for new progressive candidates in November. Big donors don’t have to control election outcomes—if people turn off television and social media all that spending means nothing. But, it also requires people to research, talk to candidates, and think.

If SCOTUS can overturn every law designed to establush justice, ensure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare and secure the blessings of liberty to us the people-- our imperfect union will continue to grow ever more dysfunctional regardless of whom we the people elect.

The language of the Constitution’s Preamble is a clear mission statement for the Republic that our nation’s founders sought to establish for future generations to perfect. Every SCOTUS decision should begin with a restatement of the Preamble, followed with evidence and logic that shows how their decision furthers the extraordinary, enlightened “originalist” aspirations. As you point out, this Court majority has consistently done the opposite - supporting a modern authoritarian political agenda rather than seeking to be faithful to the visionary goals of our nation’s founders.
