Something I haven’t seen mentioned, but which seems to characterise the attitude of these thugs, is the violence with which that women was thrown to a frozen pavement, and which triggered this episode. It took some guts to intervene and try to protect her, and that says everything to me about his character… and the response says everything about theirs…
Why was she/they being pepper sprayed? That’s a defensive measure. She was a bystander simply observing a CPB action. They assaulted her without provocation! It’s thuggery! Then murder!
Mary, you captured the essence of this unrelenting nightmare: "How much longer are Americans willing to accept a government that tells them not to believe their eyes, while wrapping repression in the language of patriotism and law and order."
Here is how I will talk about the incident, as a Veteran of Foreign wars:
One of our VA caregivers, a nurse who has given years of service to my fellow injured veterans, was murdered in the streets on Minneapolis by Federal Agents under the guidance and with the approval of our American President. Gunned down in cold blood while lawfully exercising his first and second amendment constitutional rights of Free Speech and the right to keep and bear Arms. Does that sound right, is that an accurate way to talk about the incident?
That will be part of the opening paragraph in my next letter to my congressional representatives.
Commenting from the UK, if the last year has shown us anything it’s that the US form of governance is fatally flawed. It has worked for hundreds of years because, generally, decent people have been elected President, however, the checks and balances have found themselves wanting when Trump, an authoritarian sociopath, got elected.
The President gets to select the leaders of every arm of government, unelected people whose only qualification in this instance, is blind obedience to the president and being a pathological liar. That’s how we get to the situation where the DoJ is blatantly trying to prosecute Trump’s perceived enemies, the secretary of Health and Human Services is an anti vaxer with weird medical theories untethered to science, the man in charge of the armed forces is a former Fox presenter that Trump liked and the Secretary of Homeland Security is in full George Orewell 1984 territory over the killings of Renee Good and Alex Pretti.
Trump has seized powers he doesn’t have under the law but who’s going to challenge him on this? Not the AG, that’s for sure, not Congress because they’re too cowed and cowardly, (the Republicans that is although the Democrats have been too silent so far). Trump has taken actions that many in Congress say are illegal, but what have they done? Nothing.
The president gets to appoint judges, many of whom judge in an impartial manner, as they should, but far too many judge in a partisan manner and seem almost to be expected to. Aileen Cannon is a prime example here. The Supreme Court is the pinnacle of insanity here. It has a 6-3 Republican majority. I’m sorry? The supreme court of the country proudly leans strongly to one party’s ideology in matters of law?
The president has the power of pardon. Why? So far, he’s pardoned all the rioters who tried to change the election result in 2021 and sundry others all convicted in court, some it appears to Trump's personal benefit. Only the judiciary, ideally an impartial judiciary, should be able to pardon anyone.
There’s talk of Congress impeaching the president. Who’s going to enforce that? Not Pam Bondi. She’s already for the most part blatantly ignored a law passed by Congress that the Epstein files must all be released.
The USA seems to be pretty much all the way to being an authoritarian fascist state and I don’t know how you come back from that.
I not only "like" this post but LOVE it! Again, being from a nearby neighborhood to these recent murders, I think back to the brave woman who took video of Derek Chauvin kneeling George Floyd's neck. Our citizens know that video tells the truth.
Kristi Noem needs to be impeached. She blatently lied to the American people about the murder of 2 innocent American citizens. She needs to be impeached so she can never hold office again. She is a disgrace.
Trump's comment about leaving ICE in MN "for financial fraud' is telling. It shows that he really does think of ICE/CPB as his private army to accomplish whatever he wants. Clearly neither ICE nor CPB has any authority to investigate fraud, and rounding up migrants with no connection to the fraud will not do a thing to stop it. This is so obvious I'm kind of ashamed to be typing it.
If there is actual fraud still going on after the indictments the way to investigate is really boring: bunches of FBI or DOJ auditors, who have no need for guns at all as they pore over documents. Interestingly, of the 92-98 indictments in the Somali Fraud cases, 70 were brought under Biden. So this administration has a ways to go with actually indicting the group, assuming they have the evidence. At this point one suspects that it will be hard to find a grand jury willing to indict or even a jury willing to convict in MN: the ICE surge has totally skewed the jury pool and made rooting out of actual fraud that much harder.
Way to go in protecting citizens from fraud, drumpy.
Thank you for this and sharing the info about the demonstration in Coos Bay. I have been a bit wary of attending demonstrations in Coos Bay since going to one following the abortion decision. I saw two people show up with assault rifles, they were pro womens rights. I also noticed a couple of people point hand guns out their car windows briefly as they drove by in Downtown Coos Bay on hwy 101. There is a Turning Point event here this week along with a counter demonstration and I do not want to be anywhere near downtown Coos Bay that night.

Thanks for the facts about the incident, Mary.

Mary, thank you for reminding us of his last spoken words, "Are you ok?".
This is who he was. Great phrase for one of your mugs! Thank you for your clarity and insight.
Hope you and Marz are enjoying being out and about!

Greetings:
Here’s how to destroy a once-respectable political party in just two steps:
1 Elect Donald Trump.
2 Elect Donald Trump again.
The same steps can be employed to dismantle a once-functioning democratic republic.
You can change the trajectory or you can cower.
Regards,
